Two upcoming VSU Small Farm Outreach Program events with Ben Dukes: Small Farm Orientation on Thursday, October 22 (online or in person), and Coop Camp, Part 1 on Thursday, October 29 in Foster, Virginia.
A two-hour course for new farmers with zero to five years of experience. Small farm agents Ben Dukes and Malique Middleton and Dr. Theresa Nartea walk you through how to build a productive, profitable farm. Every participant receives a Small Farm Orientation manual. Joining online? Install Microsoft Teams and test your microphone and speakers before the session.
The fundamentals of poultry production: local regulations, site selection, coop design, breed selection, predator protection and flock management. Learn about raising birds for eggs, meat or profit, and hatching versus buying chicks. A guided farm tour and Q&A follow, with fall drinks, light refreshments and snacks.
