The Roanoke Foodshed Network invites you to join for a
Farm Succession: Protecting the Legacy while Transitioning the Business
featuring Gabe Brown, Understanding Ag
Thursday, March 26 / 1:00-2:00 pm ET
Farm succession is often seen as difficult and contentious. It can strain relationships while putting an unnecessary financial burden on both the parents and their heirs. It doesn’t have to be that way. In this webinar, Gabe Brown will share his family’s own experience and the experiences of other farm families. Gabe will dive into topics that include starting the conversation about farm succession, understanding and communicating the landowner’s wishes, what to do if no heir is apparent, and the difference between farming and non-farming heirs. Does fair mean equal? What is control vs. independence? Understanding the two components of the farm: the operating business and the land itself. He will explain how certain legal structures can serve as succession planning tools, and the importance of financing the next generation on the farm. Gabe will also share real farm case studies about challenges and successes in farm transition. You will also hear from the Southwest Virginia Agrarian Commons about their land access model.
