Gardening for Wildlife: Audubon at Home Wildlife Sanctuary Certification
Looking for a way to make an environmental difference in your own yard, church grounds or condo complex by creating a sanctuary for wildlife using native plants and other resources? This friendly talk reviews the “whys and how” of supporting local wildlife, and how you can obtain an Audubon at Home Wildlife Sanctuary Certification in your garden. Speaker Alyssa Ford Morel is an Extension Master Gardener, Master Naturalist and the Audubon at Home Co-Coordinator for Arlington County. Free. Putting Your Garden to Bed
Did you know that Fall is the ideal time to plant trees, shrubs, and perennials? This class offers easy tips for onsite composting, providing winter habitat and food for wildlife, and end-of-season care of tools and equipment. We’ll help you identify opportunities to learn from this year’s successes and failures (we all have them) to lay the groundwork for next year. Speakers are Extension Master Gardeners Joan McIntyre, who leads the VCE-MGNV Neighborhood Champions program that supports Master Gardeners as they offer gardening expertise to their neighborhoods, and Molly Newling, who excels at teaching the fine points of pruning among her many other gardening talents. Native Plants for Winter Interest
Cooler Fall weather is considered the perfect time to add woody plant to your landscape. Learn about some native trees and shrubs, as well as selected perennials, ferns and grasses, that you can still plant to provide interest and beauty to the garden throughout the winter. Extension Master Gardener Elaine Mills, a creative force behind the resource Tried and True Native Plant Selections for the Mid-Atlantic, serves as a co-coordinator at the Glencarlyn Library Community Garden, a Virginia Cooperative Extension Demonstration Garden in Arlington, Virginia. Information kiosks have plant lists and other cultural tips. Information in parentheses indicates when Extension Master Gardeners may be working in the gardens and be available to answer questions. Please wear a mask when visiting the gardens and maintain an appropriate social distance when talking with volunteers!
