Virginia Wheat Production Rises Sharply
Virginia farmers harvested 10.2 million bushels of winter wheat during the summer of 2022 according to the
Virginia Field Office of USDA’S National Agricultural Statistics Service. This was up 27% from the previous
year. Yield is estimated at 68.0 bushels per acre, up 1.0 bushels from 2021. Farmers seeded 230,000 acres last
fall, up 25,000 acres from 2021. Area harvested for grain totaled 150,000 acres. Acres for other uses totaled
80,000 acres.
Barley production for Virginia is estimated at 602,000 bushels, up 15% from the revised 2021 total. Average
yield per acre, at 86.0 bushels, is up 11.0 bushels from the previous year. Producers seeded 30,000 acres in
2022, unchanged from last year. Harvested area, at 7,000 acres, is unchanged from 2021.
Production of all wheat for the U.S. totaled 1.65 billion bushels, up slightly from 2021. Grain area harvested
totaled 35.5 million acres, down 4% from the previous year. The United States yield is estimated at 46.5 bushels
per acre, up 2.2 bushels from last year. The levels of production and changes from 2021 by type are winter
wheat, 1.10 billion bushels, down 14%; other spring wheat, 482 million bushels, up 46%, and durum wheat,
64.0 million bushels, up 70%.
Barley production for the United States is estimated at 174 million bushels, up 45% from the revised 2021
total. Average yield per acre, at 71.7 bushels, is up 11.4 bushels from the previous year. Producers seeded
2.95 million acres in 2022, up 9% from last year. Harvested area, at 2.43 million acres, is up 22% from 2021.
